Thomas Sauer
Pianist Thomas Sauer is active as a soloist, chamber musician, and teacher. A member of the Mannes Trio, ensemble-in-residence at the Mannes College of Music in New York City, Mr. Sauer also collaborates frequently with noted instrumentalists such as violinist Midori, violist Misha Amory, and cellist Colin Carr. Recent appearances include performances with the Quad-City Symphony; concerts with the Mannes Trio at the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society and the Raritan River Festival; a performance of Birtwistle?s Harrison?s Clocks at Merkin Concert Hall; solo recitals at St. John?s College, Oxford, and the Garden City Chamber Music Society; recitals with Colin Carr at the Holywell Music Room, Oxford, on the Artists of Excellence Series in Rockville, Maryland, and the Wolf Trap Center; recitals with violinist Mark Steinberg at Princeton and Yale Universities; performances at the Marlboro, Portland, Seattle, El Paso Pro Musica, Four Seasons, and Salt Bay Chamber Music Festivals; recitals with Midori at the Philharmonie in Berlin and the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels; performances with members of the Juilliard String Quartet at the Library of Congress; and numerous concerts with the Brentano String Quartet. His recording with Misha Amory of two Hindemith viola sonatas is available on the Musical Heritage Society label; his solo recording of five Haydn sonatas on MSR Classics; and a recording with violinist Miranda Cuckson of music by Ross Lee Finney on Centaur Records. He has also recorded for the Tzadik label, and appears on discs issued by the Seattle and Portland Chamber Music Festivals. In recent seasons, Mr. Sauer has premiered works by Robert Cuckson, Sebastian Currier, Keith Fitch, David Loeb, Donald Martino, and David Tcimpidis.
Mr. Sauer holds degrees from the Curtis Institute, the Mannes College of Music, and the City University of New York. His major teachers include Jorge Bolet, Edward Aldwell, and Carl Schachter. A member of the piano faculty of the Mannes College and the music faculty at Vassar College, Mr. Sauer is the founder and director of the Mannes Beethoven Institute and co-artistic director of Chamber Music Quad Cities, a festival based in his hometown of Davenport, Iowa.
