This project turns into a hell of a recording! Can't wait to hear the final result.

Sangmi knows how to work with my piano, and she loves the instrument, and the instrument loves her back and obeys her beautifully.

She is a wonderful musician, of course, but she also turned out to be quite an entertainer with a marvelous sense of humor. She was talking about composers and their works, as well as sharing stories and anecdotes.

My favorite was about a lady who was praising Ms. Mason&# [...]

Day of Editing, Night of Mastering - Albertine Votapek, Richard Sherman, Juyeon Kang (Sept. 19, 07)

That was a day!

I started with editing for "Joyful Noise" CD of the pianist Juyeon Kang from Orange City, Iowa, that we recorded in early August. It is going to be a marvelous CD with a great program (Bach, Haydn, Brahms, Debussy, Scriabin... does it get any better than that?). Juyeon is a great pianist with wonderful technique that doesn't get in the way of her musicality. She makes my Steinway sound beautiful!

Then Albertine Votapek stopped by to start working on [...]

Shiho is Michigan State University College of Music student, and she wanted to record the program that she is playing for her recital this coming Sunday. The program includes Betthoven's Sonata, Liszt's Funeral March and Schumann's Davidsbundler Dances (both books!!!). Quite a program!

I always thought that recording yourself before an important performance is very helpful, andI think these sessions proved it to be true once again.

Unfortunately, I got so engaged in t [...]

Jan Eberle editing session (Sept. 14, 2007)

Oboe professor at Michigan State University College of Music Jan Eberle stopped by to put some finishing touches on Spectral Trio CD that should be ready for press sometime next week. The sound and the playing on this recording is so beautiful. Makes me very sad that pianist Kim Schmidt will never see this CD... He passed away in August... Hearing his charming playing on this recording makes me happy, hearing his voice on some of the takes makes me cry...

Quentin flew in from New York City to record a CD of romantic music by Liszt, Saint-Saens, Weber, and some of his own compositions. He is getting a Doctorate degree at Juilliard studying with Claude Frank and Jerome Lowenthal. Quentin has degrees from Peabody, Yale and Juilliard. I honestly lost track of his degrees quite a few years ago.

He is an excellent pianist and just a super nice guy to work with. I certainly had fun, I think he did too!<img src="images/62/DSC02260.jpg" alt="DSC0 [...]

Ricardo Lorenz editing (Sept. 4, 07)

Ricardo Lorenz is professor of composition at Michigan State University. We recorded his piece for solo cello earlier this summer with Miguel Rojas, cellist who now lives in Philadelphia. It is a great piece, combining a lot of different techniques and articulations, and moving gracefully between cute and profound, characteristic Latin rhythms and long melodies. I look forward to hearing this workin concerts!

Vocalist Shahida Nurullah and guitarist Spencer Barefield were doing the concert on the campus of the Cranbrook Educational Comunity in Detroit area. This concert was supposed to take place outside in the gardens, but due to the weather was moved to a new location under the roof but with open sides overlooking beautiful series of fountains. Recording these concerts is usully a puzzle that needsto be solved - which cable goes into the amp, which cable goes into the PA system, which signal do I [...]

Beautiful sounds of saxophone filled The Ballroom. David Stambler is assistant professor of saxophone at Penn State University and he and Jun Okada are working on the CD of music by Weiser, Prokofiev, John Anthony Lennon and other composers.

Neumann mics sound awesome on saxophone, capturing the mellow sound with great detail, and Schoeps mics on my Steinway are always reliable.
<p>Yes, the piano is turned around allowing better separation of sounds and better control of t [...]

That was a lot of fun! Albertine and Ralph Votapek recorded the whole CD of two piano music. We decided to call it "From Mozart to Piazzolla", because that's what it is (there is Schubert and Debussy in between). The pianos where set nose to nose, and I decided to take both lids off, so they sound more similar and what a sight that was! I couldn't help myself, I had to climb up to the catwalk and take this picture.<img src="images/62/dsc02231.jpg" alt="" width="511" height="383 [...]
