American Record Guide September/October 2009
Composed from 2004 to 2007, this music is more impressive than many of the pieces in other collections of new Chinese piano music I have covered for these pages. The composers here have wedded modern harmonies to pentatonic scales, open harmonies, and other Asian elements. We hear flickers of Debussy, Cowell, Bartok, and others, along with a wide range of specific Western references from Bach to funk, but the music is identifiably Asian, always colorful and inventive. Chih-Long Hu, who is currently on the faculty of East Tennessee University, plays with nuance and vividness, and the recording is excellent.
