Chopin: 24 Etudes Op. 10 & Op. 25
Celebrating the bicentennial of Frédéric Chopin’s birth, the Blue Griffin label releases a CD of the composer’s 24 Etudes Op. 10 and Op. 25, featuring the acclaimed Ukrainian-born pianist Irena Portenko. For Portenko, who debuted as soloist with the Ukrainian National Symphony Orchestra at age eight, the recording is a logical segue to her highly-successful performance of the same program at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, where the pianist received a standing ovation, followed by critical acclaim, prompting Anthony Tommasini of the New York Times to praise the performance as “admirably honest and clear-textured, ” and state that “Portenko pulled of a feat that puts her in a select company.”
