The interbellum Twentieth century offers one of the most fascinating ecosystems of piano music – one which tends to be dominated by works like the sonatas of Berg and Scriabin, the préludes of Debussy, the character pieces of Prokofiev and Barber (all established repertoire, played and heard every season). This program is an act of advocacy, positing an “alternative” cross-section of repertoire – rarely-heard “outcast” works written by women between the two World Wars – as worthy contributions to a richer, more complete piano literature.
