Recorded by Blue Griffin Recording’s GRAMMY®-nominated producer and engineer Sergei Kvitko, In Her Voice came about in early 2020 in celebration of the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote in America. The project highlights the poetic voices of many women who were active before or during the era of American women’s suffrage, as well as contemporary voices.
The recording was centered around the composer Celius Dougherty, and the world premiere recording of his Eglantine and Ivy: Eight Sonnets from the Portuguese Song Cycle. The cycle is a setting of Sonnets from the Portuguese by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806—1861). With the world premiere recording as the anchor, the rest of the album features settings of poetry by Enid Clay, Emily Dickinson, Sara Teasdale, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Jo Brandon, and Christina Rossetti by composers Muriel Herbert, Lori Laitman, Eric Funk, Eric Ewazen, Ella Jarman-Pinto, and Sarah Hutchings.
