After the critically acclaimed debut recording, Trios by Faure, Buide, and Zemlinsky on modern instruments, Trio Séléné explores the possibilities of period instruments for its second project. The trio commissioned composer Yevgeniy Sharlat for a new work to explore the specific timbres of early musical instruments, their transparent textures, and distinct colors and qualities. In the spirit of balancing rhetoric and spontaneity, the Trio brings the highest expression and thoughtfulness to the music it performs. By juxtaposing the Beethoven Trio, op. 11 and Eberl’s Grand Trio, op. 36 with Sharlat’s Trio Contemplating the Moon, Trio Séléné reimagines and recasts the distinctive characteristics of these early instruments. With this second release, Trio Séléné establishes itself as the only such ensemble that is equally at home on modern and period instruments.
